Alfred Archer was the son of William Archer (1789-1879) and his wife Caroline, of Brickendon, Tasmania.

Letters received from Alfred Archer’s mother while he was at school with Mr Hawkes, dated December 1854, August & September 1856, February - July 1857 (9 letters) : also from his father 16 July 1862, 16 July 1863 (2 letters); sister Ellen, 8 February 1869 & 13 March 1879 (2 letters); brother Harold written during visit of both brothers to U.K., 7 May & 19 September 1878 (2 letters); cousin Alice Archer, August 1877 & January 1880 (2 letters); Joseph Mosman about the cricket club 8 March 1875; Henry H. Tippler, Wellington New Zealand, 23 September 1878.
